About & Editorial Standards

Scrutiny of institutions, not claims to speak for communities.

The publication is built around a deliberately narrow authority: the public record of Australian government, judicial, regulatory and corporate action.

What this publication does

The Australian First Nations Policy & Accountability Briefing tracks public decisions and commitments affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Its principal sources are legislation, court and tribunal decisions, parliamentary records, inquiry submissions and reports, ministerial decisions, official registers, gazettes and public datasets.

The aim is not to reproduce everything published on the beat. It is to identify developments that materially change the position, explain them in plain English, connect related processes and state what should be watched next.

Scope statement

This publication covers public-record government, judicial, regulatory and corporate action. It does not interpret, reproduce or claim authority over Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander cultural knowledge, language, stories or ceremonial material; adjudicate identity; or publish community-held or confidential information.

Publisher and standing

The publication is published and edited by Philippe Foubert, an independent researcher and writer based on Quandamooka Country in Queensland. Philippe Foubert is not Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Nothing published here should be represented as Indigenous-authored, Indigenous-owned or Indigenous-endorsed unless that is expressly stated with the agreement of the relevant person or organisation.

Editorial method

  • Primary sources are linked wherever publicly available.
  • Claims are attributed. Where evidence is incomplete or contested, that is stated rather than smoothed over.
  • The distinction between fact, interpretation and inference is maintained.
  • Briefings carry a Last verified date because their value depends on freshness.
  • Corrections will be acknowledged rather than silently erased from the record where the change is material.

Indigenous editorial advice

The publication is being designed to include paid Indigenous editorial or cultural advice as the subscriber base develops. Such advice will not be used as a decorative claim of endorsement; the role, scope and compensation arrangements will be stated accurately.
